Following on from the talk in the morning, this session will provide some hands-on experience in practical lexical semantics, as it was developed in the PropBank project (Palmer, Rosenzweig, et al.) and is being extended in the OntoNotes project (Weischedel, Ramshaw, Marcus, Palmer, and Hovy). We will break up into several groups, and then:
· create an inventory of senses, with definitions and examples,
· exchange the senses,
· annotate a list of example sentences,
· compare annotations and compute agreement scores.
In doing so, we will experience first-hand the issues surrounding sense/concept granularity, realize the importance of annotation, and begin to see the difference between sense and concept.
